OUR CONCERN!

“Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
3 John 1:2

“He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.”
Luke 9:2

At Melanated Doc, we are deeply concerned about the disproportionately high rates of chronic health conditions impacting the Black community. Illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, obesity, and mental health disorders—including PTSD, depression, and anxiety—continue to affect our well-being and overall quality of life.

The economic burden of these conditions is significant, encompassing direct medical costs, lost productivity, and the often-overlooked toll of reduced quality of life. These issues are further compounded by longstanding systemic inequities that contribute to higher disease rates and limited access to quality care.

In response, we are committed to delivering culturally informed education, resources, and support that empower Black individuals to take charge of their health. Through increased awareness, community advocacy, and practical tools for wellness, we aim to close the gap in health outcomes and help our community thrive—physically, mentally, and spiritually.

This statistic highlights the urgent need for accessible, effective, and culturally responsive mental health services tailored to the unique experiences of Black individuals…….

Only 25% of Blacks Seek Mental Health Treatment

Despite the prevalence of mental illness, only 25% of Black Americans seek treatment, compared to 40% of White Americans. This disparity is driven by several barriers, including stigma, limited access to culturally competent care, mistrust of the healthcare system, and a shortage of Black mental health professionals. These factors often lead to underdiagnosis, misdiagnosis, and inadequate support—further widening the mental health gap……..

65% of Black Youths Report Traumatic Experiences

A staggering 65% of African American youth report experiencing trauma—more than twice the rate of their peers from other ethnic groups. This alarming disparity underscores the urgent need for targeted, culturally informed interventions and support systems to address the lasting effects of trauma and promote healing within the community……

State of Chronic Health Conditions in the Black Community

56% of Blacks are affected by Hypertension

Hypertension is a widespread health issue, but its impact on the Black community is especially severe. Black adults are more likely to develop and experience more severe forms of high blood pressure, increasing the risk of serious health complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Systemic factors such as limited access to care, healthy foods, and historical mistrust of the healthcare system contribute to this disparity.  These gaps underscore the urgent need for culturally informed prevention, early detection, and effective management strategies…..

Approxiamately 13% of Blacks are Diabetic

Diabetes is a major health concern that disproportionately affects the Black community. Black adults are 60% more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than non-Hispanic White adults—and are twice as likely to die from the disease. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 42.6% of adults aged 18 and older have prediabetes, and an alarming 20.5% of children aged 12–17 are also affected. These disparities underscore the urgent need for early intervention, education, and culturally responsive care to prevent and manage diabetes within the Black community……..

Black Children are 1.5 times more likely to have Asthma

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition affecting millions of children worldwide, but its impact is disproportionately severe within the Black community. Nationwide, 12% of Black children are diagnosed with asthma—more than double the rate of White children at 5.5%.
